Why does the windshield freeze ?
On winter nights, the coolness of the ground is transmitted to the objects in contact with it, and can reach negative temperatures. The water in the warmer ambient air then deposits on the vehicle windows and forms a more or less thin layer of frost. This is particularly true in the early morning, when the temperature difference between the ground and the air is greatest. The vehicle becomes colder than the ambient air.
How to defrost a windshield outside ?
You can buy a classic car window squeegee in most shops, which is ergonomically designed for the uncomfortable position of the driver leaning over the windscreen, which can be very high or very wide. This type of scraper is also designed to be robust enough to remove a layer of frost without scratching the windshield. The most effective way to remove frost is to run the squeegee in parallel strips so that the ice is removed from the entire surface of the glass. Remember that even areas outside your field of vision should be cleaned as well. Use telescopic squeegees to reach all corners of your windshield.
Another tip is to use a defroster. This is available in spray or aerosol form. Spray 20 cm from the windshield and then remove the remaining gel with a cloth or scraper. This will have a quick and effective effect, but should only be used in an emergency as these products are hydrocarbon based.
Can I pour hot water on a frozen glazing ?
It is tempting because hot water poured on the ice melts the thin layer of ice. However, this should be avoided at all costs: apart from the fact that the amount of water poured on would also turn into ice in a short time, the temperature delta will cause the windshield to expand and even a small chip could turn into a crack under physical stress. The windshield would have to be replaced.
Does antifreeze melt ice on the road ?
There are many effective products on the market to melt ice. How to do it? Move the car safely to the street where you can apply the antifreeze to the entire lane. This will lower the solidification point of the water and your car will be able to drive on the ice more safely.
Why can't I drive with a frozen windshield ?
A tip for those who are often in a hurry: take the trouble to defrost all the windows. It's always a good idea to defrost the windshield, but it's often too late for the sidelite: you're already driving and it can be dangerous. The driving code states that every driver must be able to keep control of his vehicle at all times. The driver must be able to make the necessary manoeuvres. Frosty glazings can only impair the driver's visibility if he or she needs to ensure optimal peripheral visibility.
