Can You Pass the MOT with a Damaged Car Windshield?
Passing the MOT (Vehicle Inspection) is a mandatory procedure to ensure your car meets the safety and emissions standards. But what happens if your windshield is damaged? Is it possible to pass the MOT under these conditions? In this article, we explain everything you need to know.
What Do the Regulations Say About the Windshield in the MOT?
The windshield is a key component for road safety. It not only protects vehicle occupants but also ensures the driver's visibility.
The Directorate-General for Traffic establishes that any damage affecting the driver’s field of vision may be grounds for rejection during the MOT. This includes cracks, chips, or impacts within the area swept by the wipers.
What Types of Windshield Damage Prevent Passing the MOT?
Not all windshield damage results in an automatic fail, but there are specific criteria that MOT technicians consider:
- Minor Fault: Small marks outside the driver’s field of vision.
- Major Fault: Cracks or impacts in the direct line of sight, especially if they exceed 40 mm or if there is more than one.
A minor fault does not prevent driving but must be corrected. A major fault, however, means the vehicle fails the MOT and cannot be legally driven until repaired.
What Happens If You Attempt the MOT with a Damaged Windshield?
If the windshield presents a major fault, the MOT will be marked as unfavorable. This means you will have a limited time to repair the damage and retake the inspection.
Driving with an unfavorable MOT can result in fines of up to 200 euros, as well as vehicle immobilization in severe cases.
Can a Damaged Windshield Be Repaired Before the MOT?
Yes, and it is highly recommended.
Repairs are possible if the damage is small and outside the field of vision. If there are extensive cracks or the damage affects visibility, the windshield will need to be replaced.
Many comprehensive insurance policies or those with windshield coverage include repair or replacement of the windshield at no additional cost to the driver.
Tips to Pass the MOT Without Issues
Before attending the MOT, check the condition of your windshield. If you detect any damage, consult one of our Glassdrive workshops.
Worn-out wiper blades can also affect visibility and be the cause of a minor fault. Make sure they clean properly.
